Today we talked about Mansa Musa. We looked at West African Civilizations, Islam, trade networks, and gold. We talked about how the slave trade might (will) create major issues in West and East African societies. Then we watched John Green and decided that our narrative of World History isn't complete without African societies due to their massive wealth, power, and stability.

Today we started talking about African Societies. We looked at the geography of Africa and made predictions about the role that geography would play in the development of African Civilizations. Then we talked about water, iron, and cows! We saw how the Masai gave the US cows after 9/11, and how difficult it still is to find water in East Africa.
Your homework tonight is to complete the attached question sheet using the attached reading on Songhai, Ghana, and Mali.
Today we talked about arguments. We used Jared Diamond's theory on the shape of Africa in order to analyze the argument he proposed about Africa's geography. We identified his thesis statement, evidence, background, analysis, and conclusion in order to see what an effective argument looks like.

Today we talked about arguing. We looked at logos, ethos, pathos and then applied these strategies to asking your parents for things. Then we looked at arguments from De Las Casas and Sepulveda in order to determine how they used logos, ethos, and pathos.

Today talked about syncretism. We looked at multiple examples including Mestizos, Slamball, TacoBell, Voodoo, and Dia de los Muertos. Then we talked about the encomienda system. We looked at how the Spanish Crown determined that 1/5 of all precious metals in the America's belonged to them before looking at the Caste System that was established.
