Today we defined political parties. We looked at their purpose, goal, and organization. Then we talked about elections. We decided that we don't really vote for parties (or shouldn't) but for people. Then we began researching the 3 main candidates for President to better understand how each party functions.
You don't have any homework tonight.
Today we played a gerrymandering game. We had a great time manipulating voting districts for our own gain.
Your homework is to write a short (5-8 sentence) reflection on today's activity. Think about the following questions:
How did the game work? What did you think of the process?
What is the purpose of gerrymandering? How does this impact the democratic process?
What are the benefits of this process? What are the risks?
I've attached the link to the Gerrymandering Game for you and a partner.
Take your choice of either level 1 or level 2. I would also suggest that you start on the "basic" difficulty setting.
Today we talked about indirect disenfranchisement. We looked at the 25th amendment, redlining, and gerrymandering. Then we talked about the FHA and the impact it had on the Greater Seattle area in terms of racial segregation.
