I'm out for training today. Here are the instructions for class on Thursday. All of this is due on Friday:
Create an annotated image of Chapter 2. This chapter covers the setting in which the majority of the novel takes place, so it's an important image for us to keep in mind. Your visual should include the characters from chapter 2, at least 5 quotes from the text to show what's happening, and the key places in this setting.
Below this post is an example that Mr. Smith drew last year (I'm a terrible artist).
For Chapter 3, please create an 8-panel comic that summarizes the key events in the chapter. For each panel, include a short summary of the event and why you included it.
Read Chapter Cuatro for Friday!
Today we debrief Chapter 2 in Bless Me, Ultima. Here are the questions we discussed:
What is the Act of Contrition in the Catholic Church?
How does Ultima help Antonio overcome his fear of the “presence,” or the soul, of the river?
What do you think Anaya is saying about the lasting impact the war has on returning soldiers? Why?
What are Lupito’s last words? State whether or not you believe these last words are directed at Antonio.
Why did Lupito kill the sheriff? What is wrong with Lupito?
Who tried to reason with Lupito before he was shot?
What is Antonio’s biggest concern about being a priest?
We also talked about some major theme of Catholicism and how they manifest themselves into Bless Me, Ultima.
Your homework is to read Bless Me, Ultima Chapter 3.
Today we introduced the major ideas of BMU and talked about Chicano Literature!
