Today we talked about love. We worked on defining it, before deciding that you can still love something if you're willing to criticize it. We also decided that being able to acknowledge the negative aspects of something allows you to love it more fully. After this, we decided that we can love our country while also criticizing it. Then we started looking at propaganda created by the federal government during WW2.
Your homework is to:
1.Write a brief definition of patriotism. What does it look like? How do you know if someone is a patriot?
2.Ask someone in your family their definition of patriotism. How does it compare to yours? What might cause this similarity or difference?
3.Does the definition of patriotism ever change?
Today we read If You Give a Mouse a Cookie in order to talk about appeasement in World War 2. We looked at the rise of fascism, militarism, and nationalism in Europe before starting the war with Pearl Harbor.
