Today started designing our own Great Depression Era superheros in order to represent the issues of the era as well as the sense of escapism for which many Americans yearned.
You will have 20-25 minutes on Monday to finish your comics. Your homework is to make sure that you have enough of your comic done to complete it in this time frame.
Today we talked about escapism in the 1930s. We looked at how Americans looked for forms of distraction, with many finding this in comic books.
Then we read the very first Superman in order to answer these questions:
What do you notice when reading comics?
How is reading images similar or different to reading text? What becomes important?
What do you notice about the message of this comic?
What is Superman being used to do?
Today we talked about daily life during the Great Depression. We looked at the Dust Bowl, the Great Flood of 1936, and general poverty.
Then we started working on Great Depression Snapchats. I've attached the worksheet here, as well as instructions for the Great Depression Visual we worked on yesterday.
Your homework tonight is to complete the Great Depression Snapchat
Visual: Please complete a visual to represent the United States during the Great Depression. Label the following:
Lack of care
No incentive to retire
Lack of confidence in:
Lack of cash flow
Lack of Housing
For the Snapchat:
Using Chapter 32 as evidence, create a 4-part Snapchat Story detailing the impact of the Great Depression on the lives' of Americans
Include a picture of 4 of the following:
-The Great Flood of 1936
-The Impact of the Great Depression of Farmers
-The Impact of the Great Depression on Families
For each image, include a quote from the textbook, as well as a justification for your image
Today we spent our time reviewing for your final, which will take place on Thursday.
You should study.
Today we finished Invictus. It was inspiring. Then we talked about how nations need something to create unity, and how rugby played that role for South Africa.
Your homework over the weekend is to study for finals. We will have a review day on Tuesday.
Today was a self-driven study day. We will have a structured review period on Tuesday.
You have a final next week, your homework is to study.
Today we talked about Silent Cal, President Hoover, and FDR. We saw how Hoover lost the confidence of the nation, allowing FDR to dominate the election of 1932 with his promise of a "New Deal" for Americans.
Then we worked on our outlines, which are due tomorrow.
Tomorrow will be a review day. You are expected to print and bring your study guide to class.
Today we continued to work on our outlines. These are now due on Friday, January 15th.
Additionally, Friday the 15th is the cut off for late work submissions (on which you will receive half-credit)
I highly encourage you to take advantage of this, as late credit is better than no credit!
I've attached your final study guide to this post, as well as the outline document
Today we finished our discussion of the causes of the Great Depression. Then we started working on a structured outline, which is due Thursday.
I've also attached instructions for the High School and Beyond Plan, which is due February 1st.
Further, the study guide for your final is attached.
Today we talked about the economic climate of the 1920s. We saw how people obsessed over "Keeping Up with the Joneses" in order to appear wealthy. We talked about how this was driven by the media, and resulted in a booming economy (because people were spending money). We looked at the Stock Market, and talked about how its crash created a domino effect with the banks, brokers, and average Americans.
Your homework tonight is to read the background essay you were given in class. Tomorrow we will finish our economics discussion before starting a little project.
